Everyday Speaking Practice: Requests, Clarification, and Small Talk

Knowing the rule is useful, but improvement comes from noticing the errors you make repeatedly. This lesson uses common mistakes to help you build a more reliable understanding of everyday speaking.

Common Mistakes

Common error Better form or strategy Explanation
What? Sorry, could you repeat that? A polite clarification phrase is more natural in many situations.
Give me coffee. Could I have a coffee, please? Requests are usually softened in service situations.
Yes/No only Add a short reason or follow-up question. Everyday conversation develops through short expansions.

How to Correct Yourself Efficiently

  1. Identify the exact part of the sentence or task that caused the problem.
  2. Compare your answer with the correct form or strategy.
  3. State the reason for the correction in your own words.
  4. Create one new example immediately so the correction becomes active knowledge.

Practice

Take the patterns above and change the subject, time, place, or vocabulary while keeping the key rule or reading/listening strategy the same. The goal is not to memorize one sentence. The goal is to reproduce the pattern accurately in a new context.

Self-Review

After practice, ask whether you can explain the rule or strategy without looking at the lesson. If you can explain it and produce a new example, you are ready to test the topic. If not, review the example that caused the most difficulty.
