Food and Drink English in Context: Vocabulary Practice and Useful Expressions

Vocabulary becomes useful when you can retrieve it inside a sentence, not only when you recognize it in a list. This practice lesson turns food and drink vocabulary into active English.

From Word to Expression

Pattern Example Why it matters
ingredient use ingredient in a complete sentence one item used to make a dish
portion use portion in a complete sentence an amount of food for one person
recipe use recipe in a complete sentence instructions for preparing food
spicy use spicy in a complete sentence having a strong hot flavor
fresh use fresh in a complete sentence recently made, picked, or prepared
order use order in a complete sentence ask for food or drink in a restaurant

Build a Mini-Context

Choose four words from the table and connect them in a short scenario. Keep the language simple enough that you can focus on using the target words accurately. Then read the scenario aloud once or twice to strengthen spoken retrieval.

Avoid These Vocabulary Problems

  • Do not force a word into a sentence if you are unsure how it combines with other words.
  • Do not memorize only a translation; connect the word to an English definition and example.
  • Do not collect too many new words at once. A smaller set used repeatedly is more valuable.
  • Review vocabulary over several days instead of doing one long session.

Practice Routine

  1. Read the target word and explain it without looking at the definition.
  2. Say one common phrase that contains the word.
  3. Create an original sentence.
  4. Use the word again later in a different sentence or conversation.
